The fortified city of Cittadella, usually referred to as the Citadel, is situated in the center of Victoria, the capital of Gozo. More than 7000 years ago, the city was founded, and since then, it has been an integral part of the island's culture and character.

Since the Neolithic era, Cittadella has been inhabited, and throughout the ages, several civilizations have used it as a stronghold. The Phoenicians fortified the city in the eighth century BC, and the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Arabs all eventually settled there.

The Knights of St. John acquired possession of the city in the 13th century and erected a new defense system to defend it. After the French invasion in 1798, the castle was no longer under the hands of the Knights and was abandoned.

The British Colonial Government started a restoration initiative to bring the city back to its former splendor in the early 20th century. Cittadella has evolved into one of the island's most notable sights since the project's completion in the 1960s.

Cittadella's spectacular defenses, which comprise a number of walls, bastions, and towers, are its most prominent characteristic. While strolling around the walls, visitors may take in expansive views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

The Assumption Cathedral, which was constructed in the 17th century and has a lovely Baroque front, is one of the city's many historic structures. The cathedral is home to a number of significant works of art, including an Italian Madonna and Child painting.

The Old Prison, which was constructed in the middle of the 18th century and used as a prison until the early 20th century, is another noteworthy attraction in Cittadella. Visitors can now examine the jail's cells and discover the island's criminal history by visiting the museum that was once the prison.

Visitors can get a sense of Gozo's rich cultural and architectural heritage at Cittadella, a captivating and historic city. The city is a must-visit location for anybody interested in history, culture, or architecture because of its formidable defenses, beautiful structures, and breathtaking views. Everyone may find something to do in Cittadella, whether they want to explore historic ruins, learn about the island's past, or just take in the scenery.
