The fortified city of Cittadella, usually referred to as the Citadel, is situated in the center of Victoria, the capital of Gozo. More than 7000 years ago, the city was founded, and since then, it has been an integral part of the island's culture and character.
History
Since the Neolithic era, Cittadella has been inhabited, and throughout the ages, several civilizations have used it as a stronghold. The Phoenicians fortified the city in the eighth century BC, and the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Arabs all eventually settled there.
The Knights of St. John acquired possession of the city in the 13th century and erected a new defense system to defend it. After the French invasion in 1798, the castle was no longer under the hands of the Knights and was abandoned.
The British Colonial Government started a restoration initiative to bring the city back to its former splendor in the early 20th century. Cittadella has evolved into one of the island's most notable sights since the project's completion in the 1960s.
